The importance of spaying rabbits
this is Alahna ..she arrived with us after being found as a stray bunny ..
Alahna is a mature girl at least 3 to 4 yrs old .. when she arrived we suspected she might be pregnant as she was a little tubby around the middle ...but she passed her 32 day mark and no babies.
Now , we spay all female rabbits before re homing ..this is for 2 reasons ...1/ we are against indiscriminate breeding and spaying stops anyone using our bunnies as breeding machines .. 2/ There is a very high risk of uterine cancer in unspayed domestic female rabbits ..
When Alahna was opened up the vet had a surprise ... her uterus was filled with water . .this is called Hydrometra and it is a precondition to Pyometra which is an infection of the uterus causing it to fill will pus ..the rabbit would then die of septicimia..
by weighing Alahna before and after the op we know that her water filled uterus weighed 620g . ..thats a big weight for a little bunny .
The good news is that Alahna is recovering well and should make a full recovery ... ..so this is one lucky girl ...
