Flystrike...important PLEASE READ
This is what fly strike can do to a poor bunny ...
flies lay eggs on the rabbit ...usualy if the rabbit is dirty or in soiled conditions or is ill but sometimes clean healthy rabbits can be targeted too.. .
in a matter of hours the eggs hatch and the maggots start to feast on the rabbit .. .. this bunny was lucky...it was taken to a vet within a couple of hours of the maggots hatching...they have caused extensive damage to its skin but only just got through to the muscle in two small places .
her underside is much worse than you can see on the pics but i thought it was a bit gory to post on here ..
if you find fly eggs or maggots on your rabbit it is important to SEEK VET ADVICE STRAIGHT AWAY ...waiting even a few hours may result in an agonising death for your rabbit.
DO NOT wet your rabbits fur ...you can remove any visible maggots but some may be under the skin so you still need to see a vet who will probably shave the fur (if it is wet this cant be done properly)
If a rabbit with flystrike is left untreated it will literaly be eaten alive..
it takes only a short time for the damage to be enough for the rabbit to go into shock ..the wounds ccan also easily become infected and toxins then enter the bloodstream ...
in severe cases the only thing to be done is Euthanasia

Re: Flystrike...important PLEASE READ
its awful ....
this bunny is one of the lucky ones ...hopefully she will make a full recovery ..
I had a lucky escape with one of my own buns a couple of months ago ... i actualy saw a fly laying eggs on her ... if i had tucked her up for the night at her usual time i wouldnt have seen the eggs and by morning she would have been infested with maggots ...thank goodness i was running late ..
shes an old lady so a prime target for flies ..she now has netting over her mesh door to keep the flies out .
